U.S. 33 widening project public meeting details and planned work

The project addresses crash frequency and traffic congestion along the corridor.

INDOT cited level of service F at intersections of C.R. 40 and Plymouth Avenue with U.S. 33. Level of service measures traffic conditions from A, best, to F, worst.

Planned project elements include:

  • Full-depth pavement reconstruction near U.S. 33 and C.R. 40.
  • Reconstruction from north of Maple City Drive to the northern terminus.
  • Milling and resurfacing outside reconstruction zones.
  • Added travel lanes and dedicated turn lanes.
  • Lane configurations ranging from two to five lanes.
  • A multi-use path with a grass buffer from Kercher Road north.
  • Reconstructed sidewalks and curb ramps.
  • Updated pavement markings, signage and signal modifications.
  • Possible new traffic signals along the corridor.
  • Stormwater upgrades including curb and gutter, inlets and storm sewer.
  • Potential infiltration basins in select areas.

The project would require more than 0.5 acre of new permanent and temporary right-of-way. No relocations are anticipated, according to INDOT.

Construction would occur in phases with temporary lane or sidewalk closures.

INDOT did not outline a construction timeline in its meeting announcement.
