GOSHEN, Ind. — City officials activated the Flood Response Plan as the water level in the Elkhart River rose past 7 feet and continues to rise Thursday, March 12, 2026.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Water Prediction Service forecasts the river will crest near 7.5 feet at around 2 a.m. Friday.
Flood stage in Goshen begins at 7 feet, placing the projected crest in the minor flood category.
Floodwaters already cover portions of Shanklin Park, Mullet Park, Roger’s Park and will continue to spread until the floodwaters crest and begin to go back down sometime Friday.
The National Weather Service Northern Indiana issued a Flood Warning for the Elkhart River at Goshen Thursday morning effective until early Sunday Morning.
City officials urge residents to monitor river conditions and avoid flood-prone areas.
Sandbags available for Goshen residents
Residents who need sandbags may contact the Goshen Street Department at 574-534-9711 during business hours.
Street Department hours run Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

City officials urge residents to follow these safety precautions:
- Never walk or drive through floodwaters.
- Avoid low-lying areas near rivers, streams, and drainage ditches.
- Move valuables to higher ground if your home sits in a flood-prone area.
- Keep children and pets away from moving or standing water.
- Clear leaves and debris from storm drains if safe to do so.
Anyone experiencing a flash flood emergency should call 911.
