Goshen hydrant flushing scheduled for Sept. 28 through Oct. 2

GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen hydrant flushing will take place Monday, Sept. 28, through Friday, Oct. 2, weather permitting.

Goshen Utilities conducts hydrant flushing each fall to maintain water quality and keep the system working properly.

Crews move large amounts of water through the system to clear rust, sediment and minerals from water lines.

The process also allows crews to check hydrants and ensure they work properly for fire protection.

Goshen hydrant flushing includes daytime and nighttime work

Daytime flushing will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. throughout the week.

Crews will work in the upper pressure zone, which includes areas northeast of U.S. 33 and the Norfolk Southern tracks.

Nighttime flushing will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

Flushing overnight reduces disruptions for homes and businesses and allows crews to avoid heavier daytime traffic.

It also gives water pressure time to recover before peak morning use.

The nighttime schedule is:

• Monday, Sept. 28: Madison Street and 10th Street south to the city limits. Crews will also flush between the Norfolk Southern tracks and U.S. 33 south to the city limits.
• Tuesday, Sept. 29: Cottage Avenue to 10th Street, from the Norfolk Southern tracks south to the city limits. Crews will also flush between Lincolnway East and the Norfolk Southern tracks east to the city limits.
• Wednesday, Sept. 30: Pike Street to the southern city limits and between north Greene Road and Cottage Avenue.
• Thursday, Oct. 1: Norfolk Southern tracks to the southern city limits and between north Greene Road and the western city limits.

What residents should know

Hydrant flushing can temporarily stir rust and sediment within water lines. That may cause water discoloration.

The water remains safe to drink. Residents who notice discoloration should run cold water until it clears.

Residents should avoid doing laundry while crews are flushing hydrants in their area. Rust and sediment could stain clothing.

Goshen Utilities can provide special soap if laundry becomes stained during flushing.
