Goshen Municipal Airport reopens runway as major improvement projects continue

GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen Municipal Airport improvement projects reached a major milestone Friday as aircraft once again began using the airport’s primary runway following completion of Phase I of a multi-million-dollar FAA-funded rehabilitation project.

Airport Manager Randy Sharkey officially reopened Runway 09-27 at 9:52 a.m. Friday, May 15, following 40 calendar days of construction, weather delays and technical adjustments. The work included milling, patching, crack repair, resurfacing and temporary runway markings as part of a more than $5 million Federal Aviation Administration investment in airport infrastructure and future growth.

The airport received a $4.3 million FAA discretionary grant for the runway reconstruction project and an additional $799,920 FAA grant for the Taxi Lane “C” extension project. Together, the awards represent one of the largest federal investments in a general aviation airport in Indiana this year.

The runway rehabilitation marks the first major reconstruction of the airport’s primary runway since 1990. Contractor Phend & Brown completed the work, with engineering oversight provided by Woolpert.

“Most of the corporate tenants have already repositioned back to GSH after temporarily staging at the Warsaw and Elkhart airports,” Sharkey said.

Goshen Municipal Airport improvement projects continue into summer

Phase II of the runway project is expected to begin in mid-June and conclude by July 8. That phase will include runway grooving and permanent markings.

Additional construction projects are also moving forward across the airport campus.

A new five-bay airport storage equipment building is nearing completion after replacing an outdated hangar facility. Freedom Builders serves as contractor on the project, which is scheduled for completion June 5.

Construction on the Taxi Lane “C” extension begins May 18. The project will improve access between hangars and the terminal ramp while supporting future corporate development opportunities and expanded airport operations. Milestone is serving as contractor, with completion expected by July 3.

“This is the year for major improvements at the Goshen Municipal Airport,” Sharkey said. “So far, so good.”
